Hi. I just happened on this site and was curious to see Schaefer mentioned here. And then to read, "...where the battle rages", I like that ( Luther). After suffering quietly the 'Clinton years' and then followed by the 'Bush years', I can remain silent no longer. We are admonished in scripture, of the wrong when 'evil', is called 'good'. The early Americans had to learn to speak out against the King and his rule, while their tory neighbors and friends rebuked them. It is an election year and time for change. There is a conflict, as then, between those who would keep things the same and those who feel a real change is needed. Luther helped to bring about a change. I feel that if we focus on what is 'great" about America, we can move in that direction. When we have leaders who do things in our name, but to our shame, they need to be held accountable. Otherwise, they are tyrants. Lets take the money used for war and invest it here in the US for "plowshares", we will see a rich return. I started a website; www.bush-it-usa.com, and with political art. I hope to hold some of our leaders' feet to the flame of public attention. Peace is something noble to pursue and we are told (not by our leaders' examples) that the reward is a blessing. Not since the sixties have I witnessed such desire for change. As a country, we have never officially 'repented' for Vietnam. That has only made it easier to repeat the aggression. Our hawkish culture has strayed far from its early Quaker/Amish influence. It would be good for the country to re-read some of their teachings. I was encouraged to speak out after reading the quote of certain American, who had spent time at Walden. He basically said to say what you have to in a strong way. If later, you find that it was wrong, change it, but say it harshly. Hopefully, we all can do something to move toward a more peaceful existence. Imagine (!) how the US would be if it had not engaged in the wars of the past fifty years. Half a century!

Although I've been involved in studying Christian theology for over 30 years, I haven't been that foud of Schaefer. I found that the way he attacked Dali and Kierkegaard seemed to come from a position of that "heresy hunting"
mentality which was exactly what Jesus prayed against. Ronald Reagan also had this divisive thread with the way he demonized democrats.
One has to really strive for wisdom to understand exactly what it is we believe and what are the possible consequences. Although those who profess Christ may differ in how we follow Christ, that doesn't mean one of necessarily more right to God. I believe this is really the message of the New Testament and often where we expect to find the greatest light we end up finding great darkness. Like Franky Schaefer, his son, I ended up getting more from the writers of the Philokalia that Evangelicals.

Bill:

Here's the quote I think you're thinking of - it's one of my favorites:
“If I profess with the loudest voice and clearest exposition every portion of the Word of God except precisely that little point which the world and the devil are at that moment attacking, I am not confessing Christ, however boldly I may be professing Him. Where the battle rages there the loyalty of the soldier is proved; and to be steady on all the battle front besides, is mere flight and disgrace if he flinches at that point.”

-Luther’s Works. Weimar Edition. Briefwechsel [Correspondence], vol. 3, pp. 81f
