Who changed the words to "melt me, mold me, fill me, use me"? Seems to lose a great deal of power without the "break me". I had a hard time finding the song with the original words used. Here is one great link:

He has a description of his dealings with Teddy on NCLB. Well-intentioned, but, in my judgment, naive. TARP gets pretty extensive treatment and its clear that the spectre of financial meltdown was real. A 700 point drop in the Dow in one day tends to sober everyone. He was ambivalent about TARP, recognized that it violated the principles of the free market, but saw (or was shown) an imminent catastrophe of epic proportions. McCain-Feingold does not get any discussion - either the specifics or the principles. And you've just identified three of the major areas of disagreement i have with him. He was not an economic conservative. And was played by the Democrats on NCLB and McCain-Feingold.

Still, in spite of my profound disagreements on those issues, I admire him as an individual.

Thanks for the review, Rob. Have you read "The Bush Betrayal" by James Bovard? I have not yet read "Decision Points" but having seen at least a couple of Bush interviews about the book, I have a feeling I will remain in the Bovard camp. I am curious to read what Bush has to say about "No Child Left Behind," McCain-Feingold, TARP, and his unwillingness to veto anything. However, I will wait until I get through a few books in my existing backlog. By then the library should have a copy available as I refuse to contribute directly to the former President's coffers. And this from a guy who voted for him in 2000.

Rob,
I enjoyed your critique. I'm glad that you advised your reader of your bias at the outset. There's no question that Bush took quite a verbal shellacking when he was in office. In my recent memory, that's what we tend to do to whoever is steering the ship. The current president is taking his as well. I think it's one reason that we have seen the caliber of candidates for that office decline over the last several decades. I am a great admirer of George Bush, Sr. (and voted for him!) but I've never been convinced that his son filled his father's shoes with equal grace and integrity. I don't know how history will judge him, but we will see. Time and perspective tend to mellow the commentary. I had never heard the story about Barbara Bush's miscarriage......either version. It sounds like the book is an interesting read and one that I'm looking forward to getting to.

His military record is 62 pages! I've never seen a military record so large. I know someone who gets digital copies from NARA should you want to save some money by not ordering directly through NARA.

Very neat, Rob. However, I wish you hadn't sent off for his service record. It's digitized online at Footnote.com. For the price of your file from NARA, you could have paid for 2/3 of a year's subscription to Footnote. It's a very large file, too, for a CMSR.

A brother of one of my ancestor's fought with a NY infantry unit at Gettysburg. Otherwise, my Civil War ancestors (all union, no confederates) were involved in less known activities. One was stationed at Harper's Ferry and was part of a detachment keeping track of Mosby's Raiders. Then another did guard duty in Memphis. Another was a saddler and was thrown from his horse .... when he took the horses to be watered.:-) Finally one was part of the Enrolled Missouri Militia fighting all the problem areas of Missouri.

Your point is well-taken. Out motto is/ought to be: "Its the spending, stupid!"

I'm hoping for a new breed of Congressman. Lots of Rs need to be replaced as we flip seats from D back to R. The Rs were WAY too complacent about increasing spending, but at least they kept an eye on revenues so that the budget balanced for a while, and then deficits were (relatively small). The Ds apparently care not at all that the deficit has exploded.

But you're right, spending is out of control.

Love that web site, btw...
