NY Times discovers a 13-year-old homeschooled conservative

and features him on the front page of the Fashion & Style section.

Their tone is condescending, but Jonathan’s message comes through loud and clear.

A Conservative is someone who believes in

1.    Life
2.    Personal Responsibility
3.    Less Government
4.    The Founding Principles

  1. I read the article… I didn’t catch a condescending tone though.

I’m glad that this kid has been given the opportunities that he has been. I’m only sad that any parent would let their child onto the political playing field at such an early age. This kid may not be a Michael Jackson. He may be a brilliant logician… but he is so young. 13. I wouldn’t at all say that he has been indoctrinated… but certainly a child of this age is only able to discuss certain moral problems and political theories. (I doubt his parents would let him read certain books on his own without instruction and careful guidance.)

Regardless of age… unless someone who declares themselves so loudly as a political figure has the ability and knowledge to discuss in detail Marx/Hegel’s Historical Materialism as a theory of historical and political progression, Tom Paine’s The Age of Reason, Hitlers Mien Kampf, and maybe some Richard Rorty and some Cartesian rationalism, Augustine’s The City of God, Lerners the Creation of Feminist Consciousness, The Prince by Machiavelli, The Souls of Black Folk by WEB Debois, and The Making of the English Working Class by EP Thompson…I’m going to assume that many of their stances are founded upon evidences located much closer to home. Perhaps not the home… but certainly the community. And I will not consider that person a well rounded non-baised individual. (This really excludes almost every American politician.)

I think allowing this young boy to enter the public sphere is a mistake. His parents should be very proud of him and who he is… but should use a little more discretion.
