“If you can’t budget, you can’t govern.” – Rep. Spratt (D-SC)

Rob,
I left the following comment on the video at youtube yesterday. It still hasn’t been “approved” by GOP.gov:
Coming from the party that enjoyed majorities while they nearly doubled federal spending from 1995 to 2007, it rings pretty hollow. If the GOP is serious about spending, stop squelching Ron Paul and pushing McAmnesty as your candidate.
Your point is well-taken, but it’s not the whole story. The R’s actually were fiscally responsible from 1994 (actually, they took office in 1995 after being elected in 1994). The deficit had already been falling thanks to the recovery which began in 1992-1993. The R’s behaved responsibly from 1995 to 2001, when the trend reversed sharply. 9/11 is part of that, but not all. The Deficit peaked in 2004, and then fell again until 2007. The Dems took back over in 2007 and what has happened since then is breath-taking in its fundamental irresponsibility.
Spend a little time with the numbers:

No doubt Clinton supporters like to crow about the deficit (and debt) reduction immediately following the 1994 elections. 9/11 and the permanent undeclared “war” on terror, the unconstitutional dept. of homeland security, all those TSA agents, etc. all contributed.
My point was on the spending itself – the large increase of the budget under their majority, not the budget deficit amount:
When you double the budget, bragging about not exceeding it with a budgeted deficit (which the GOP still wasn’t able to do 8 of those 12 years all the while increasing the budget) doesn’t mean much.
Your point is well-taken. Out motto is/ought to be: “Its the spending, stupid!”
I’m hoping for a new breed of Congressman. Lots of Rs need to be replaced as we flip seats from D back to R. The Rs were WAY too complacent about increasing spending, but at least they kept an eye on revenues so that the budget balanced for a while, and then deficits were (relatively small). The Ds apparently care not at all that the deficit has exploded.

But you’re right, spending is out of control.
Love that web site, btw…
